We have been a one child family this week. Hugo has left us for some alone time with his grandparents and when we’ve tried to call to get to talk to him, he’s been too busy. Among other things we hear he has been fishing (and catching a few).

We have been trying to make the best of all that insane amount of snow that we’ve had this year. We are very lucky to have a slope for sledding in our back yard. We are a bit intimidated when thinking of what will happen when all this is to melt away. Oh well, we’ll know soon enough as we’ve just had the first day with temperatures above freezing. There are still massive amounts of snow though.

Last Friday was the day of our last goodbyes of Moa, 2009 09 30 – 2009 12 28, Hugo’s and Adam’s little cousin.

The ceremony was lovely with the most beautiful music performed by friends of Mattias and Elin.

Needless to say these times are terribly sad for our family, and for Mattias and Elin in particular.

We’re having the winter of our lives, it seems. Snow, snow and then some more snow. We wonder what the boys will think of a normal winter after this one.

Frost on the living room window
The thermometer keeps plunging downwards, and this together with more and more snow makes for interesting times. This weekend we had water coming down the chimney from too much snow on the roof. It is now rather difficult to meet another car on our small road as it gets more and more narrow after the snowplow comes along. Still, we love it, even if it means extra travel time to and from work.

It is probably the coldest and snowiest winter in the Stockholm area since the 19th century.

We have been on a quick trip to Amsterdam for the promotion of Gustaf’s brother Pontus as he presented his doctor’s thesis. All went well, and the family now has it’s very own doctor of medicine.
The presentation was all in Dutch, so we couldn’t quite follow the details, but the locals assured us that most of the discussion was show-boating from the various professors… The reception and party also went well, and we were the last to leave together with the object of the celebration.

Yesterday, I went walking on the roof tops of Stockholm. Well actually, it was one roof top on the Old Parliament building on Riddarholmen (Knight’s Island) which is next to Old Town. The walk is on a special walkway designed for this and yes, you must wear a harness and safety lines.

The walk offers a spectacular view over Stockholm, from Old Town and across the water to Södermalm and Kungsholmen. The contrasts between medieval city and modern high rises couldn’t be more obvious. The option of doing the trek in the dark is a new addition and is only available during the dark season mid-November to mid-March. After that, the evenings are too bright to give the proper spooky feeling. I guess that’s life on the 59th latitude… :D
